Fort Whoop Up hold smudging ceremony on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Fort Whoop Up held a smudging ceremony this afternoon in part with National Indigenous People day which also coincides with the launch of their season. Many people gathered down on the grounds for the ceremony and also took part in some other events happening today. Connor Kenney, the Fort Whoop Up Site Coordinator says, its important to have these events and recognize all indigenous stories.

“One of the most important things is especially because we were able to get some elders on hand as well as some indigenous food makers is just reminding people that it’s not just in a historical context that we reside on the traditional territory of the Niitsitapi people and that they are still making new stories and creating new things and just in trying to involve them as much as possible to use our platform here at the Fort Whoop up to amplify those voices”

Fort Whoop Up will remain open until the beginning of September.
