Festival Square to open outdoor public skating rink

Call it a mini Canadian Rockefeller Centre if you will. In addition to Festival Square’s Christmas tree, the outdoor area will soon feature an outdoor skating rink for locals to skate on this holiday season. Installation of the rink began today and will be ready to go as early as Friday. An official with the Downtown BRZ says it will be a real ice rink, not artificial, and explains the decision behind building one there.

“There’s been demand from the community for sure to see an ice rink in downtown, whether it’s Galt Gardens or wherever. And the festival square space is just the perfect opportunity for us to set up. We’ve seen a decrease in events, obviously the cold weather, so this is a great opportunity to try this out this year. If we see the uptake and the community using it and stuff, we can expect it hopefully again next year,” said Emily Chong, Marketing and Communications Manager, Downtown BRZ.

Once the rink is ready to go, it will be open from 9 a.m., to 11 p.m., daily.
