The first phase of a new construction project in Downtown Lethbridge is now underway.

Staff with the city told us what kind of work will be completed in the area.

“This is a multifaceted project that the city is undertaking. We have a watermain renewal that’s going to be happening from 3 Avenue South all the way to 6 Avenue South. As well, we’re going to be doing pavement rehabilitation throughout the limits of the project from west of Scenic Drive to Stafford Drive and 3 Avenue South down to 7 Avenue South. And once that work is completed, we’ll be installing protected cycling lanes. These will be the first protected cycling lanes within the City of Lethbridge. It’s a great project to really connect in some of the existing infrastructure from our pathways to our existing bike lane that already exists down on 7 Avenue,” says Crystal Scheit, the urban revitalization manager for the city.

According to city officials businesses located at 7 Avenue will continue to remain open during the construction.

As well, the work is expected to be completed by the end of the construction season.

The overall project is being funded through existing operating budgets, from the City’s Capital Improvement Program and from external grants.

An estimated cost for the project was not provided to us.
