Christmas Check Stop reveals downward trend in impaired drivers

Lethbridge Police Service released their results of their annual Christmas Check Stop campaign this December in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, which saw a reduction in impaired drivers.

The targeted effort to remove impaired drivers from the roads resulted in 1,768 motorists being stopped and checked for signs of impairment. Of that number, police issued four Immediate Roadside Sanction Fails. There were 103 violation tickets issued, plus three criminal charges handed out for drivers who failed to stop.

Sgt. Tony Ramotowski of the Traffic Response Unit in a statement says “More vehicles were checked this year than last, and there was a 60 per cent reduction in the number of impaired drivers apprehended. While enforcement and education efforts will continue, these results are encouraging, and we hope to see this trend continue.”

An IRS Fail results in a penalty of a 15-month suspension, 30-day vehicle seizure, $1,000 fine and mandatory completion of the Planning Ahead course.
