Alberta businesses warned of sophisticated scam
Alberta businesses are being warned about a sophisticated fraud scheme that’s making the rounds. The Better Business Bureau says scammers create fake email accounts—and in some cases fake websites—to impersonate legitimate businesses. Wes Lafortune, Media Relations with BBB says criminals order large quantities of products, which are delivered to third-party warehouses before being shipped overseas. He says one Edmonton business has reportedly lost more than $50,000 worth of merchandise.
BBB recommends verifying customer information using validated contact details and using extra caution with urgent or rush orders and confirming.
